Basic HTML for SEO- meta tags and more

16th December, 2009

If you're planning on carrying out your own SEO campaign, the fact is that in the beginning (at least) you will need to know some very basic and simple HTML code. At the very, very least, you will need to know a little bit about meta tags. So here are the important ones.

Meta tags

Unless you're using a content management system that lays this out nicely for you, you'll need to have a text editor such as Notepad or Dreamweaver to change your meta tags. Some E-commerce platforms and CMSs have built-in applications for you to edit your meta tags. If yours hasn't, you will need to find out if there is a compatible plugin available.

Title: The title of each page of your website should be different and contain your keywords. To enter a title for your webpage, type: <title>Your title with keywords here</title>within the <head> tag on your page before the <body> tag.

Description: The description of your page is what visitors will see when they search for you in the search engines. It should encourage people to click through to your site, but should also contain your keywords. Write this for humans, not for robots. To enter a meta description for your webpage, type: <meta name="description" content="Your example descriptionm, written for internet searchers in mind, should go here." />

Headings

You may also find the following heading tags important. They don't hold much SEO weight, but they give search engines a good indication of the things that you consider to be the most important on your page. They should contain your keywords and be used sparingly.

<H1><H2><H3><H4><H5><H6>

The <H1> heading tag is the most important and they get less important in ascending order.

Don't forget to close your heading tag if you have opened it. You can make the text contained within a heading tag appear differently by attaching a cascading style sheet (CSS) and modifying the code.

Hope that has helped! It's only very basic, but it should give you what you need to get started. You'll be an SEO expert in no time
