What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
28th October, 2009
First of all, we should probably explain what they stand for.
SEO= Search Engine Optimisation
SEM= Search Engine Marketing
Now for an explanation...
You're probably more familiar with the term SEO. But in actual fact, SEO is only a small part of SEM. SEO concerns itself only with the changes we make to the HTML code on your website such as the meta data. It effects the organic search listings, not the sponsored or paid-for ones.
SEM includes a whole range of different marketing techniques. Search Engine Marketing includes submission to directories, whether they're free listings or listings you've paid for. SEM also includes any Pay-Per-Click or sponsored listings that appear alongside the organic search listings. SEM is more immediate, but SEO is more long-term and searchers trust organic search listings more than paid for listings.
To keep things simple, we refer to SEM and SEO collectively as SEO throughout the website. It makes things easier and keeps us all from getting confused.
All good SEM should include SEO. In fact, it should be the first step you take towards actively promoting your site. Search Engine Optimisation makes your website better for both the search engine spiders and your customers.
