What is SEO?
27th October, 2009
How many times have I been to a networking event and tried to explain exactly what it is I do to people who know very little about the internet. Quite a few. And it's nobody's fault, least of all the person opposite me with the blank, but polite expression. So if you're here because somebody recently told you they were an SEO, this should help with your confusion...
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation. It basically involves taking a look at the code on your website and modifying it so that search engines can find your site easily, can find exactly what your site is about and as a result of which, can rank you accordingly and help drive traffic to your site.
If you have done a little bit of research into SEO and all that it entails, you may have come across the rather technical term "Meta Tags." These used to be an extremely important part of SEO, but have dropped out of favour somewhat in recent years.
Some meta tags are now more important than others. And some won't effect your ranking at all.
SEO effects your organic listings in what we call SERPS or Search Engine Results Pages. These are the most trusted listings by searchers as the rank in this part of a SERP cannot be bought. The bought listings refer more to SEM or Search Engine Marketing.
I hope that's cleared a few things up for you. This is a very basic explanation of SEO. There's actually a lot more than this involved. You can find more information on other parts of this website, so have a look around!
