Which social media site is the one for you?

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Digg, Delicious, Blogger and all the others that you could share this article on by clicking the ShareThis button below ;-) They're all a buzz and businesses are getting involved too. But surely you can't have a presence on all of them. So which ones do you put your energy into?
This really depends quite a lot on the type of business that you have. If you have a business that could also be linked to a hobby or something that people enjoy doing, then creating a Facebook fan page could be the right choice for you. This is because people have the option of becoming a fan of your page on Facebook. And they're more likely to become a fan of, say, sailing or BMXs than printing or carpets. But who knows... it takes all sorts.
If you're a creative type such as a musician or an artist, not only could you benefit from Facebook massively, but you're also likely to find other creative types hanging around the MySpace domain. The profiles on MySpace are far more customisable than on Facebook and allow you to make your space look, well, kind of just how you want it... if you have a basic knowledge of HTML.
Twitter seems to be the one that everyone's going for. Microblogging is a relatvely new phenomenon compared to MySpace and Facebook, but it's growing quickly. It reflects the fast pace at which most of us live our lives and enables you to post tiny snippets of information whilst not getting bombarded by reems and reems of text... if you choose who you follow carefully.
LinkedIn is another popular networking site amongst professionals. This is a profile that is personal to you rather than your business. It allows you to make connections with people who can then recommend your services. Whilst some of the other social media sites encourage you to add and follow people that you don't know, LinkedIn is used to keep in contact with people that you have worked with or for.
So, which social media sites are best for SEO?
I suggest that you get a profile on the three main social networking sites: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. And others if you have the time.
I say this mainly because each profile you have gives you a possibility to link back to your home page giving you that all-vital and highly sought after SEO juice. That is, as long as there isn't a 'nofollow' command involved.
