Why bother with Facebook?

29th October, 2009

Because there are over 20million Facebook users in the UK alone. That's 20,228,480 to be exact.* The growth of Facebook users in this country over the last nine months was a whopping 35.42%.

And if your business sells in the states it's even more good news. Try multiplying the UK's users by four and triple the growth percentage. That's a lot of social media users that you could potentially be interacting with.

Other reasons to bother with Facebook?

It's cheap, it's personal and it's quite a lot of fun.

We're not saying that Facebook will be everybody's cup of tea. There are certain kinds of business that will definitely benefit more from other social media sites. This is explained more thoroughly in one of our other useful articles, Which social media site is the one for you?

But Facebook can be hugely beneficial for businesses that are also hobbies, such as paintballing companies, tennis clubs, shops that sell sewing materials, etc. This is because Facebook users are more likely to become a fan of tennis or sewing than they are of printing or accountancy.

Of course, just because your business might not be directly related to a hobby, doesn't mean it can't benefit from Facebook at all. If you're offering useful, bitesize tips and advice, people will want to hear them. With social media, you can't force people to become a fan or listen to what you have to say. You have to actually provide something useful that people will want. If you do this, people will automatically gravitate towards you and your company.
