Link Building
Building links is one of the oldest SEO strategies still in operation. Search engines are now far more aware and able to penalise people who abuse link building for SEO. But when done properly, link building is extremely useful for effectively promoting your website on search engines.
But what is link building? It is basically the practice of collecting external links i.e. links from other websites. These should link back to the page that you are trying to optimise. The more high quality links you can get from high ranking sites, the higher your reputation will become with search engines. It works a bit like a recommendation. Google sees that other websites think your site is good because they are endorsing you by linking to you.
What kinds of practices might get me penalised?
Good quality link building is extremely time consuming and can often require a lot of effort for very little return. Because of this you might be tempted to get a lot of links from submitting to thousands of directories or low ranking irrelevant pages, just to get your external link number up.
Don't be tempted to do this!!!
The point of link building is to get high quality and relevant links. If there are lots of irrelevant sites linking to you that have low page ranks, Google will recognise that you are using link building only for the purpose of self promotion. It probably won't take any drastic action, but all that hard work will probably go to waste. This strategy needs to be carried out properly, so don't be tempted to cheat! You'll only cheat yourself...
